'Art

Gallows Tree Common, Oxfordshire
Chalgrove School Project June 2003 - arts
project at Chalgrove Primary School in Oxfordshire.
Two afternoons were spent with the year 5 and year 6 children to
produce 2 large pieces of artwork - both based on themes selected by
the class teachers. The children were unaware (well, they had a good
guess!) of the subjects of the final pieces until the second
afternoon when the children's hardboard squares were fitted together
like a jigsaw to make two very large pieces of artwork that will
create permanent features within the school.
Each child was given a
piece of hardboard marked with lines, and with colours written in
each section. It was a bit like painting by numbers on the first
afternoon! On the second day they could start to be creative as they
drew their own designs (on a specified theme) over the top of their
coloured squares. They learnt about shades of colour and had to
apply this knowledge whilst painting their overlaying designs in
shades of the background colour, so as not to detract from the
overall design.
